Taxpayers win…Patterson Looses

In Gov. Patterson, James Tedisco, Senate Republicans, State Budget on March 11, 2009 at 8:25 AM

hanging_boxing_glovesFinally, some good news for New York’s taxpayers.  You can read it for yourself here.Gov. David Patterson withdrew his recommended “new fees”in the state budget. I bet it has a lot to do with how poorly he is doing in the polls. What do you think?

Jimmy Tedisco and Dean Skelos should be gloating right now. They should be saying “Go ahead guys, have your little pow wow with out us! Good luck getting your tax and spend budget passed without us!”

Any way, thank you to all those concerned taxpayers who voiced their opinion. I have received hundreds of e-mails expressing the outrage of these fees. It’s about time somebody listened us. I only have one advice for you all;

This is only one battle of many to come. We need to continue the fight.

Politics As Usual

In Gov. Patterson, Malcolm Smith, Sheldon Silver, State Budget on March 9, 2009 at 8:51 PM

three-blind-mice

Once again, the failing Democratic Governor David Patterson, held another closed door “three men in the room” meeting. Talking about dysfunction!  Patterson has shown us that him and his administration can not govern themselves out of a paper bag.

Then you have newly elected Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith. Senator Malcolm Smith has not accomplished one thing since gaining control of the State Senate.  That’s because he’s not ready for “PRIME TIME”! Senator Smith can not get his own conference in control. The latest example being the MTA $2 bridge toll plan. Five members of his conference will not back him.

Finally, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver is the queen of procrastination. The more dissent the better off he is. Silver is known for stalling and back door deals. It only makes him more powerful. What a great government we have.

I’m proud to call myself a New Yorker…. aren’t you?

State Senate Goes Interactive (It’s time to speak up!)

In Albany Democrats, Gov. Patterson, Malcolm Smith, Senate Republicans, State Budget on February 12, 2009 at 9:59 AM

In general, when it comes to policy and governing the Senate Republicans can run circles around Smith and the Democrats. When it comes to the Internet … they are years behind.

The Senate Democratic Majority released a new interactive website to allow the public to submit ideas about how to spend the state’s money. - What a great idea!!!  What a good way to open up the process to the people and allow them to speak. That does not mean they will listen, but it makes people feel they are part of the process at the same time the Democrats collect data on people so they can more effectivly communicate to them. Brilliant!!!

Now is the time for everybody to speak up or shut up. Go to the site and tell the Democrats what you think. If your from upstate and feel you are getting screwed because everything is going downstate, then tell them. If you are from NYC, tell them they are doing a great job. In either case … Tell Them!!!

On the other hand, the Senate Republican Majority when in power would have never implemented a Internet plan like that. The Senate Republicans shaded away from the Internet. Just look at last year’s campaigns. They had a very small insignificant Internet component. Maybe … just maybe… that’s one of the reasons they lost power. No progressive thinking?

The Senate Republican’s did release a new campaign website http://www.nysenategop.org. It’s basic but functional. It does provide some useful information. They need to really bump up their internet presence if they want to survive in NY.

Actually, that goes for all Republicans in the state. Each County committee from the grassroots level up needs to create a presence on the web and harness the power it has. They need to create a network of websites, blogs and interactive issue based sites. They need to collect data, email addresses and harness the power of social networks and groups. They need to understand how the Internet works and understand it’s power.  Just then will the public understand what it is to be a NY Republican. The  NY Democrats are years ahead of the Republicans.

NY Republicans have alot of work to do. Hopefully in the wake of last year’s elections, NY Republicans across the state will rely on their technology people who truely understand the Internet to help guide the rebuilding process. That’s the only way the party will be able to truly rebuild.

Patterson ‘s Loosing Ground

In Gov. Patterson, Joe Mondello on January 29, 2009 at 9:56 AM

Today a Siena poll was released showing that the Governor’s approval ratings are down to 54-30 from 60-23.  What is really interesting is a whopping 73% of downstate suburbs disapproved on how Gov. Patterson handled Gillibrand’s seat. -That should not be a big surprise since Gillibrand is from upstate. All that statistic indicates is the tension between upstate voters versus down state voters on how they wanted to be represented.

The Siena poll also did a hypothetical head to head analysis with Gillibrand and Peter King and Rudy Giuliani. According to the poll, if the election was held tomorrow Gillibrand commands a  46-23 lead over King and a 44-42 lead over Rudy.

It is apparent that New Yorkers would prefer Rudy over King to take over that seat. It also confirms what this blog has been saying all along. Rep. Peter King is not a good state-wide candidate. This reinforces this blogs belief that he may be a good fit for his district but useless as a statewide candidate.

Now more than ever Republican State Chair Joseph Mondello needs to move a different direction. As noted in a previous blog posting, Mr. Mondello backed Peter King’s potential candidacy. If Mr. Chairman wants to rebuild the Republican Party like he has stated he wants to, then he needs to move away from selecting old political foes and move to selecting candidates who have the best chances to win. Rudy would be a good pick, he would also be a great pick to run for Governor.

It’s time for those who run the Republican Party to adapt to NY’s changing political environment and pick candidates that will put a new face on the party. That will be the only way Republicans can stay in NY.

Tuesday’s Odds and Ends

In General Info, Gov. Patterson, Joe Mondello, Senate Republicans, State Budget on January 28, 2009 at 9:26 AM

ARUGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

charlie_brownIt’s really frustrating to watch the business as usual that is going on in the Republican Party. Jimmy T. got the GOP nod yesterday to be their candidate to replace Gillibrand. Not my personal choice for that seat but I wish Jimmy well. The Democrats seem to be struggling to come with a credible candidate. It’s time for all republicans to come together and back Jimmy’s candidacy for the party’s sake.

Let’s go Jimmy!!!!

henrywojtaszekOn a slightly different note, Niagara County GOP Chair Henry Wojtaszek has been making the rounds and speaking to various republican groups throughout the different counties. People close to Henry say as the State GOP’s Upstate rep, he’s trying to rebuild and unify the county GOPs from the ground up. When asked if he is looking to challenge Mondello for the chairmanship, they deny that that is his intentions, but they also did not rule it out. You can see Henry at a Rensselaer County GOP function in February. More details to come.

In other news, Good for you Senator Skelos. Yesterday, Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos called to question Gov. Patterson’s credabilitywith his antics of “three Dem’s in a room” – which I have to give credit to Dean’s spokesman John McArdle who was dubbed that. I call them the “Three Amigos”. The Governor has made the legislative process a circus lately and deserves to called on it.

Thank you Dean!

More to come

The Three Amigos In A Room

In Gov. Patterson, Joe Mondello, Malcolm Smith, Senate Republicans, State Budget on January 26, 2009 at 11:10 PM

Hypocrites! That’s all the current Democrats are… Hypocrites.

three_amigos_patterson

For years Democratic Senator Malcolm Smith (while in the Senate Minority) bitched and complained about not being apart of the State budget negotiations. Year after year he slammed then Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno for not including him in on all the fun. Then there is Governor Patterson who as a Senator complained year after year because he was not invited to play in any reindeer games either.

Now that Patterson is Governor and Smith is Senate Majority Leader, the tables seemed to be turned. Today the Governor scheduled a three Amigos budget meeting for tomorrow. Guess who was not invited to play with the other kids. Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos and “want-a-be” Congressman,  and current Assembly Minority Leader Jim Tedisco. In fact, neither leader had a clue that a meeting was going to take place until press called asking questions.

So my question is Where is all the bipartisan bulls–t that keeps spewing out of Patterson and Smith’s mouth. It seems to me that it is business as usual.

Just once I would love to see the press and the public hold these elected officials accountable for their words and actions. The State is in the middle of a financial crisis and the Governor is playing partisan politics as usual. It goes to show you that Patterson is no different than his predecessor Eliot “whore” Spitzer – AKA Client #9.

Finally, WHERE’S REPUBLICAN STATE CHAIR JOSEPH MONDELLO? I”m waiting for a press release from State Republican Executive Director, Matt Walter calling attention to inconsistencies from what Smith and Patterson say publicly and what they actually do.

We have a better chance seeing New York turn to a red state, than hear from Mondello or the Republican State Party on anything controversial.

Another Example Why Mondello Must Go

In Gov. Patterson, Joe Mondello, Senate Republicans on January 21, 2009 at 11:49 PM

Mondellosaurus

Here is another reason the dinosaur, New York State Republican Chairman Joseph Mondello must step down.

It’s 5:00pm and I am checking my e-mail while watching my local news station (WRGB Ch6 Albany). Fred Dicker -the NY Post Capitol Editor and WRGB’s political consultant is on air discussing with Liz Bishop Carolyn Kennedy’s decision to back out of the US Senate race after she learned that Gov. Patterson is going to pick Gillibrand to replace Hillary Clinton.

As I was dancing with glee in response to the news about Kennedy (although not about Gillibrand),  I get this e-mail statement from State Chair Joe Mondello bashing the State Democrats for their support for Carolyn Kennedy.

You have to feel sorry for Governor David Paterson. It seems everyone who is anyone in the Democratic Party has an opinion about the appointment that only he is empowered to make to replace Hillary Clinton in the United States Senate.

The majority of those who have weighed in on this critical choice are betting that Paterson can be bullied, cajoled, flattered, threatened and out-maneuvered to make Caroline Kennedy New York’s next junior Senator. But as her political credentials are inspected New Yorkers are discovering she hasn’t voted in any number of elections, has yet to reveal her financial background, has the disquieting habit of presenting her ideas in half-sentences peppered with “you know,” and has hardly ever contributed to even New York Democrats. In short, her primary credential seems to be her family’s history and the media’s frenzied interest in the next chapter of the Camelot saga.

In other words, it’s Democratic politics as usual. Entitlement. If anyone else dared presume that lineage alone entitled one to one of New York’s seats in the U.S. Senate they would be roundly greeted by a well-deserved Bronx cheer. Even Hillary Clinton sought a Senate seat with far more impressive credentials, and she had to be told the Yankees play in the Bronx.

There remains an underlying principle of the Democratic Party that punishes those who work hard and succeed on their own merits. Work hard and the Democrats ensure you will be taxed from the moment you rise until the day you are dead. Just look at the latest Paterson budget with its blizzard of more than one hundred new user fees and extra taxes placed on everything from Ipods and taxi rides to movies and beer. If it moves, tax it. If a recession blasted New Yorker gets enjoyment from something, tax it double. It may be the most regressive tax plan in the state’s history. No wonder it’s a Democratic document.

Merit, hard work, commitment, professionalism, self-initiative, all the forces that have defined this nation’s strength, are irrelevant as the Democrats seek to position Caroline Kennedy as Mrs. Clinton’s heir apparent. She may be privately gracious, but those who seek to launch Caroline Kennedy’s political career are only confirming what the working people of New York are beginning to recognize: the Democrats will victimize personal success, as evidenced by an avalanche of new taxes or by ignoring the genuine political professionals whose hard work in the political vineyards gives them a real claim to a seat in the U.S. Senate — and anoint a name.  Political pundits keep chiding, “When will the New York Republicans define themselves?” In the wake of this double shot of

Democratic political arrogance, the answer is quite simple. We are the party that stands for the working Joe and Joan where personal success and hard work mean something. Where your last dime isn’t taken as a tax and where your family name is about what you accomplished – not your father, or your uncles or your cousins. It’s about a political party where personal responsibility is rewarded, not punished or victimized or taxed. That still means something in this country and it is the Republican platform that will be left standing long after this latest mess is cleaned up and disposed of. Will Caroline inherit a seat in the U.S. Senate? Only if the Democrats stay true to their principles.

HELLO JOE! YOUR A DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT!

Joe, I have to agree with some of your criticisms about the Democratic Party,  but your message is a little late. She’s already out of the race, and they have already proved your words wrong. It nice to see you have finally gotten the balls to speak out. Unfortunately you have already lost every statewide office as well as a 70 -year Republican reign of the State Senate.

ONCE AGAIN YOUR A LITTLE LATE!

My Life Through Patterson’s Crystal Ball

In Gov. Patterson on January 13, 2009 at 12:12 PM

patterson_crystal_ballI was sitting at by my computer last night toying around on the Internet when the thought about how Governor Patterson’s proposed taxes would affect my daily life.  Working in and out of politics for years I have come to the understanding that: although highly intelligent, the average New York voter probably does not truly understand or should I say appreciate how the governor’s proposals would affect their daily life.

I am not an accountant nor a finance expert, but the math is pretty simple. Although boring, here is what I did yesterday and what could be if Patterson and the rest of New York’s Democrats get their way.

The original reason why I was on my computer was to purchase tickets to Sesame Street Live – Elmo Makes Music. We do not go out much or do a lot of special treats -like most middle income families with kids, but my son is obsessed with Elmo and it would be a great treat for him to go. All seats are $14 but I had to buy 6. The governor wants to tack on an extra 4% tax on all entertainment. To keep the math simple, that’s approximately an extra $3.36 out of my pocket. Then comes his proposed fat tax. My 3 bottles of diet Dr. Pepper and can of Coke Zero – all hardly fat consuming would take an additional $1.00 out of my pocket.

For those of you keeping track that’s $4.43 so far.

Now comes the governor’s new “I-pod” tax or tax on digital media and entertainment. I just got an I-pod shuffle for Christmas – you know the $49 one. I just got paid this week so I had $10 dollars to spend on some music, so I downloaded 10 songs. That’s an extra $.80 and I had SNAP FISH (because they are cheaper than going to the local CVS) develop some of my Christmas pictures so that my wife can scrapbook them. that bill was $20. That’s an extra $1.60 and then was the two NET FLIX movies that I received. We have the $8.99 per month plan. so for this month that’s another $0.72.

To help those counting that’s an extra total of $7.55 out of my pocket so far.

In the morning my wife gave me some coupons and asked me to pick up some essential (could be debated) groceries at the local store. Looking at my receipt I had saved $12 in coupons - I am always amazed on how much my wife can pinch pennies. That would be another $0.96 out of pocket.

That’s a total of  $8.51 that could have been taken out of my pocket yesterday if the Governor and the rest of the Albany Democrats had their way.

That total does not include the increase taxes for cable TV – which I watched last night or the lifting of the gas tax over $2.00 per gallon, the increased beer and wine tax, the increased fees for renewing my van’s registration, the elimination of the STAR rebates, the lifting of sales tax on clothing purchases under $110 to mention just a few.

Where will it end?

Soon there be a tax on a person’s air usage in NY.
